Laura Robson Sent Kim Clijsters to Retirement, Beat Her at the US Open 2012

Unseeded Laura Robson of Britain pulled out a career breakthrough victory at a major tournament, after stunning the 23d-seeded Kim Clijsters, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), in the second round of the US Open. The 18-year old Brit displayed maturity beyond years as she matched Clijsters ground strokes with pounding serves to come back from 2-5 down in the first set, saved three set points and forced a tie break. She was 3-4 down again in the tie break but eventually won it after pounding a great serve that Clijsters failed to return on her first set point.

Kim Clijsters fought her way back into the match saving two match points and forced another tie breaker in the second set. But Robson did not give up. She produced a stunning winner down the line to lead 6-5 in the tie break and claimed the victory after producing another strong serve that Clijsters sent out on her third match point.

It wasn't the end that Kim Clijsters had hope to end her career, but she did not cry as looked around at the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday afternoon and waved goodbye to the fans who cheered her to three United States Open titles.
