Serena Williams Overpowers Victoria Azarenka to Lift US Open 2012 Women's Title


Serena Williams lifted her fifteenth grand slam title and fourth US Open title after defeating Victoria Azarenka 6-2 2-6 7-5. Serena who was up 9-1 against Victoria in head to head meetings appeared to dominate the match after breaking her opponent at love to finish the first set 6-2. Then the match suddenly turned around when Victoria mixed up her shots and forced Serena to commit errors and was up 5-1. Even Serena served up two aces to trail at 2-5, but Victoria held serve in the next game to level the match at one set apiece.

The third set was equally interesting. Serena lead at 1-0 and had plenty of opportunities to break but Vika held strong to level the set at 1-1. She broke Serena in the next game to lead at 2-1 but Serena refused to give up, she broke back to hold at 2-2 and aced her way to lead 3-2. When it looks like Serena was leading her way, Vika has other plans in mind. Vika held her serve again and broke Serena to lead at 5-3. Vika became aggressive with her shots sensing that she was few points away from taking the title.

But again, Serena known for her mental strength slowly clawed her way back into the match to level the match at 5-5 to steal the momentum. She then held her serve to lead at 6-5 and after a see saw battle in the last game, an error from Victoria Azarenka handed Serena the Championship!
